Case study: British Film Commission partnered with Screen Alliance Wales on bespoke film and TV production workshops

With demand for film and TV content continuing to grow, and significant studio and stage space developments and expansions currently underway across the UK, supporting the UK’s skills pipeline is a priority for the British Film Commission.

With this in mind, the British Film Commission partnered with Screen Alliance Wales through funding three bespoke film and TV production workshops, with a focus on key industry skill areas. The free workshops offered a total of 36 participants in-depth training sessions in Health and Safety, Carpentry and Location management.

Carpentry Workshop – Seren Great Point Studios 7th May

One of Wales’ leading film and TV construction companies, 4 Wood, delivered a ‘hands on’ workshop for qualified carpenters and students looking to enter the industry. The workshop allowed participants to appreciate the transferability of their skills, all the while providing them with the opportunity to network with industry experts.

Health and Safety Workshop – Wolf Studios Wales 14th May

Aimed at those already working in Health and Safety or those retired from a Military / Service background, this workshop also concentrated on the transferrable skills that participants could use on-set. A tour of Wolf Studios also gave trainees first-hand experience of the necessary procedures and regulations in place during film and TV productions.

Several participants have already been offered work shadowing placements with Anchor Risk Management who delivered the workshop, with one attendee even being recently employed as a Health and Safety Assistant on a HETV production.

Location Managers Workshop – Dragon Studios, Bridgend 21st May

This course allowed those with prior experience of working In Locations for film and TV productions to step-up their skills and knowledge to the standards required for a Location Manager role. The session focused on key areas such as risk assessments, budgets and health and safety, the latter being accompanied by a certificated course on the dangers of Asbestos.
