Sustainability and Social Responsibility

As the UK’s production hubs expand to meet the growing demand for content, maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility has become increasingly important. The British Film Commission supports productions in the following areas:

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We help productions support their crews by funding counselling sessions and providing wellbeing resources. We work closely with leading organisations like the Film and TV Charity, which offers a 24/7 Support Line and a range of practical and emotional assistance. Additionally, we promote initiatives such as the BFI and BAFTA-backed employer Action List to tackle bullying, harassment and racism, and connect productions with mental health specialists. Through partnerships with organisations like Solas Mind, we’ve provided over 300 one-to-one counselling sessions for crews on inward investment productions in the UK.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility (IDEA)

We advocate for organisations and initiatives that help productions build diverse crews and promote accessibility and inclusivity. This includes supporting initiatives such as the TV Access Project and encouraging the adoption of the BFI’s Diversity Standards, which focus on addressing underrepresentation on screen, behind the camera and in audiences. The British Film Commission also champions IDEA through targeted funding support for initiatives as well as through partnerships with specialist organisations across the UK.

Environmental Sustainability

We support the screen sector’s transition to zero-carbon by working with industry and stakeholders to provide access to resources and expertise for sustainability goals.

Albert, the UK’s leading organisation for environmental sustainability in the screen industry, offers online tools and training, events, practical guidance and thought leadership to screen industry professionals to help them identify and act upon opportunities on and off screen which can lead to effective climate action.

Many of the UK’s production hubs also offer dedicated sustainability representatives, while specialist consultancies are available to help productions of all sizes film more sustainably.

US-UK Collaboration

We assist production clients in navigating challenges when translating US sustainability and social responsibility initiatives to the UK context, ensuring bespoke support aligns with shared goals.

Partnerships and Best Practice

We collaborate with other film commissions, industry bodies and stakeholders to share and learn from best practices, ensuring continuous improvement in social responsibility and sustainability across the sector.
