Sustainability and Social Responsibility

As the UK’s production hubs expand to meet the growing demand for content, maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility has become increasingly important. The British Film Commission supports productions in the following areas:

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We have helped productions support their crews by funding counselling sessions and providing wellbeing resources as well as by connecting clients with a wide range of mental health and wellbeing consultancies and specialists as needed. We work closely with leading organisations and specialists to ensure crew wellbeing is prioritised throughout production:

  • Through partnerships with organisations like Solas Mind, we’ve provided over 300 one-to-one counselling sessions for crews on inward investment productions in the UK. We also supported 6ft From the Spotlight’s flagship Wellbeing Facilitator training.
  • CIISA upholds and improves standards of behaviour across the industry. BFC has been a champion of CIISA from the outset, supporting development of the standards and introducing the concept to our US clients.
  • The Film and TV Charity offers a 24/7 Support Line and a range of practical and emotional assistance. BFC  support the charity’s Looking Glass research and sit on steering groups advising on development of the charity’s Whole Picture Toolkit and Mentally Healthy Production resourcesWe promote initiatives such as the BFI and BAFTA-backed employer Action List to tackle bullying, harassment and racism.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility (IDEA)

We advocate for organisations and initiatives that help productions build diverse crews and promote accessibility and inclusivity. The BFC is an official partner of the TV Access Project and actively contributes to the initiative’s various working groups. We also encourage the adoption of the BFI’s Diversity Standards, which focus on addressing underrepresentation on screen, behind the camera and in audiences.

The British Film Commission works closely with specialist organisations looking to increase opportunities for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds as well as champions IDEA through targeted funding, including

  • Research and development work for the Access Coordinator role.
  • Crew and production-specific British Sign Language workshops.
  • Training and work placements for lower-socio economic background, ethnic minority, and LGBTQIA+ crew.
