The renowned studios are most famously known as the original home of Hammer horror films including ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘The Mummy’. Cult classic, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, the model work for Ridley Scott's ‘Alien,’ and classic high-end television shows such as ‘Inspector Morse’ and ‘Agatha Christie’s Poirot’ were also shot at Bray.
The studios have now been revived by the current owners, the two main stages and offices have been refurbished and Down Place House, the Grade II listed building at the heart of the studios, a former home of Alexander Hamilton’s brother-in-law, is in the course of a multi-million-pound restoration. The three original stages were recently supplemented by the addition of new stages, as part of a temporary planning approval for the expansion of the studios, giving a total stage floor area of 53,636 sq. ft. In addition, there are 39,400 sq. ft. of offices, 77,480 sq. ft. of workshops, 183,000 sq. ft. of backlot and 225,500 sq. ft. of parking and hard standing.
In addition to the significant economic benefits of the proposed development scheme, including the generation of 1400 jobs, 480 jobs supported through the development phase.
Productions since the revival of the studios include the acclaimed Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’, the hit sequel ‘Mamma Mia 2’ and the BBC/Netflix production of ‘Dracula’, which was filmed some 60 years after the original Hammer version was produced at Bray. Currently, a global production and distribution company is filming a ground-breaking internationally based TV series.
Bray Film Studios has now submitted a planning application for permanent new film stages and an impressive expansion to offer world class film production facilities to accommodate major film and TV productions. A decision on planning is expected in October 2021.
